Great Lunch with Head Coach

Enjoyed a good lunch today with the Bearcat faithful. I learned that we can expect the unexpected from a solid, young but maturing Byrd team. They are big on misdirection. They will try to draw our defense away from the real direction of their play. Our defense will be required to play their position, read the keys that will reveal the plays true intention, while maintaining and remaining in a position to make the play. For us to be successful it will require our defensive guys to be mentally alert with their heads in the game and not over react and get taken out of the play. You have heard before...defense wins ball games and we will need our defense to step it up and rise to the occasion. Offensively, likewise, our players must be mentally ready. We have offensive weapons but we will need every offensive player to execute their assignments and avoid mental mistakes. Sounds simple...

My observations over the years have always lead me to conclude...that winning happens more from being mentally prepared to play rather than simply from overall athletic ability. We witnessed a horrifying example of this in the Richwood game last year. Talent wise that game should have been an easy victory...but we were mentally absent. We also witnessed the opposite as evidenced by solid victories over Sulphur and Bastrop. If ones mind is right, I believe it will direct the body to do what is physically necessary to accomplish the task.

We have the talent to be very successful this year as I believe we have enjoyed most years in Ruston. The key to our season will depend on the ability of our guys to develop the ability to discipline their minds and obtain maximum focus when it counts on Friday nights at 7:00 o'clock. This mental discipline must first be present with our senior leadership...and they must pass it along to the rest of the team in a manner that will be embraced...not only by words but by example.
